The Brain and Obesity. Part 7 – Weight Loss by Managing the Cognitive Capacity of our Modern Teenage Brain!

Every day, you wake up with a finite amount of cognitive capacity. I like to think of it like this – each day, you start with a certain number of coins and, over the course of the day, you spend those coins going about your daily activities. In this blog, I discuss cognitive capacity, those coins, the structure of a habit, how we incorporate change, and how we plan accordingly. Let’s dive in!

The Brain and Obesity. Part 6 – Changing our Habits with the Lazy Modern Brain

Habits are hard. They serve a very important role in our lives and have been vital to the survival of the human race. They allow us to essentially automate the remedial tasks and problems that we regularly encounter to free up cognitive capacity to solve more complex problems and challenges. Today I discuss the structure of a habit, how we incorporate change and how we plan accordingly. Let’s dive in!

The Brain and Obesity. Part 5 – How to keep the old man primal brain happy

Hello, you Cool Cats! Welcome back to the Brain and Obesity series. Here’s Part 5, all about keeping the old man primal brain happy!

Today, I want to talk about how we manage them. Fundamentally, they will always be components we have zero control over, but that does not mean we can’t influence/support them to make it as easy as possible so that you have a better chance of choosing the apple over the apple pie!

What to do when you feel like your Obesity medication is no longer working!

You have been on Saxenda, Ozempic or Trulicity for a few months now, and everything seems great; your appetite and cravings for food have reduced, and hey, you lost a bunch of weight! Amazing! But now, the medication seems to be no longer working. Hunger and appetite are back, and your food intake is no longer sufficient.

What does this mean for you?

The Brain and Obesity. Part 4 – The Lazy Modern Brain

Is the modern brain lazy? Earlier in the brain and obesity series, I introduced the modern side of our brain – the teenager riding shotgun to the primal brain. Now it’s time for an in-depth look at how your modern brain is lazy and easily fatigued. It’s all about work smarter, not harder, but is that always the right path to take? Join me for some answers here.

Do you feel like your weight-loss medication Saxenda or Ozempic is no longer effective?!

Is it possible?! After a certain point, can weight-loss medications such as GLP-1 receptor agonists stop working? In this blog/video, we’ll explore what happens with GLP-1 RAs, particularly Saxenda or Ozempic, when it seems like they are no longer effective.

We call it tachyphylaxis when a drug no longer becomes effective or becomes less effective with successive doses. Does this happen in GLP-1 RAs? Does our body start to adapt? Find out the answers here.

The brain and Obesity. Part 3 – The Modern Brain

As I’ve mentioned earlier in this series, our brains have two parts: the primal and the modern. Now, let’s talk about the other player: the Modern Brain (aka the prefrontal cortex). This is the part of our brain that separates us from the animals.

What kind of influence and control does it have over our primal brain? Join me to find out.

The Brain and Obesity. Part 2 – The Primal Emotional Brain

The primal part of our brain is always working in the background. Other than being focused on our survival, the thoughts our primal brain most often have are around our emotions. And, it tends to focus largely on negative emotions. In this article/video, I’m going to talk about the negativity bias of our primal emotional brain and how it comes into play regarding our weight. Do we need to try to control it? Find out more with me here.

The Brain and Obesity. Part 1 – The Primal Brain

There are two parts to the brain: the primal and the modern. In this article and video, we will look at the elements of the primal brain (the limbic brain) and its involvement in managing our weight. The primal brain is all about survival and balance, which play a significant factor in our decisions. Can you teach an old brain new tricks?

What is the BEST Exercise for Weight-loss?

Exercise and weight loss. Weight-loss and exercise. They seem to go hand in hand. Is it true? You’ve probably asked, “What is the BEST exercise for Weight-loss?” if you have ever tried losing weight or wanted to become healthier.
