Myth-Busting: Desensitization and Damage to GLP-1 Receptors

Have you ever heard someone say that GLP-1 medications like Wegovy, Ozempic, or Zepbound stop working over time—or worse, that they damage your GLP-1 receptors? Some even suggest cycling off these medications to “reset” your system. Let me set the record straight.

In this video, I’m busting myths about desensitization, damage, and downregulation of GLP-1 receptors. I’ll walk you through the science of how these medications actually work, why they don’t “wear out” your receptors, and what real-world studies like SELECT and STEP 5 tell us. (Spoiler: these meds keep doing their job even when weight loss slows down.)

We’ll talk about the realities of weight-loss plateaus, how your body’s natural metabolic adaptations come into play, and why cycling off these meds might make it harder to reach or maintain your goals. I’ll also share why managing expectations is so important and how to navigate the noise from influencers and misinformation online.
