Wegovy and the Pancreas

GLP-1 medications may get wrongly associated with causing pancreatitis when in fact, the pancreatitis was due to another circumstance!

Like how my mother would wrongly blame me for tracking mud into the house when I have a younger and much less respectful younger brother that could easily frame me by wearing my boots and tracking said mud through the house…but, I digress.

Mechanism of Action

I am a big believer in understanding the WHY. When I understand the WHY, the better equipped I am to troubleshoot when a problem or new insight arises. So with that in mind, let’s talk about the WHY and how the GLP-1 medications such as Wegovy, Saxenda, and Mounjaro work!

Choices

Humans are rational and logical beings who make decisions and choices around their overall well-being. And it’s a common theme on social media and life in general that Obesity is a choice; that those who are obese choose to be fat. But perhaps it’s not so simple. Perhaps our choices are based on something other than logic and rational reasoning. Maybe there is more to it?

Can Saxenda Protect the Heart?

If Saxenda can help with weight loss, then obviously, it can benefit your heart, right? Because ‘being fat is bad for your health!’

This week, I review the LEADER Trial by Marso and friends; let’s take a look at what they found and delve into what other benefits Saxenda might offer. So, what do you think? Can Saxenda protect our hearts?

Let’s get into it!

Lose Weight and THEN Take Saxenda?

Are you thinking about getting on Saxenda? Have you considered losing weight before you start it? Well, a study by Wadden and friends did exactly this – they recruited a group of people, but, before they put them on Saxenda or a placebo, they had them lose ≥5% of their baseline body weight. Did maintenance of the initial weight loss plus Saxenda lead to even more weight loss? Let’s find out!

An Update: Weight Loss Medications and Obesity Medicine

While on my mini-break, there have been a lot of research articles published, but will any of the data have a long-term or significant impact on how we practice obesity medicine? Or will they just be adding another little piece to the puzzle when it comes to managing obesity? Let’s see what’s going on in the world of weight loss medication and obesity medicine!

Saxenda 101

What is Saxenda? You’ve likely heard me talk about it before. I often mention it in the same breath as Ozempic, Wegovy, and Mounjaro. However, I never talked about Saxenda all on its own. It was the first GLP-1 receptor agonist that gained approval for Obesity treatment and essentially spearheaded the way for everyone else. Save the first for last? Let’s get into Saxenda 101!

The Short on the Ozempic & Wegovy Shortage

We are back.

This is one of my first articles back, and I’m very excited to be here.

To kick things off, let’s dive into the shortage of Ozempic and Wegovy – what’s going on, and why are things shorted? We discuss some of the alternatives, things that you can potentially do, and when the shortage might be resolved.

Let’s go!
