Why Wegovy and Zepbound Might Not Be Working: Understanding Non-Response and What You Can Do

If you’ve been taking Wegovy or Zepbound and aren’t seeing the weight loss you expected, you’re not alone. Let’s dive into why some people don’t respond to these medications the way they hope.

Success in weight loss is generally defined as losing 5% or more of your baseline weight. But studies like STEP-1 and SURMOUNT-1 show that 10-15% of people on these meds don’t reach that benchmark. In my clinical practice, I see similar outcomes, and many of you have shared your experiences of not responding to these medications in the comments of my videos.

There are several reasons why this happens. I categorize non-responders into three groups: True Non-Responders, Slow Responders, and Quick Fix Seekers.

True Non-Responders might not experience any appetite suppression, possibly due to genetics or individual physiology. Switching medications might help, but for some, it may take a new drug to see results.

Slow Responders do lose weight, but at a slower pace. This could be due to factors like medical conditions, side effects, or inconsistent lifestyle changes. They might lose 1-2 pounds a month instead of 4-8, and that slower progress can be discouraging.

Quick Fix Seekers have unrealistic expectations, expecting rapid weight loss or miracles from the medication alone without significant lifestyle changes. This group often needs more education and a shift in mindset.

Remember, these medications are tools to help you on your weight loss journey. They can make things easier, but they aren’t a magic fix. Consistency and patience are key. So keep going, stay consistent, and remember that this is a long-term journey, not a quick fix.
