In this video, I discuss the critical importance of preserving muscle mass while using anti-obesity drugs like Wegovy. It’s easy to become fixated on the number on the scale going down, but this focus can lead to a future of fragility and frailty. Many people see weight loss as a sign of success without considering how much of that weight is fat versus muscle. Losing muscle can compromise your health significantly.

Whenever anyone loses weight, some muscle loss is inevitable, and this includes those using anti-obesity medications. I previously reviewed the evidence on whether these drugs cause a greater loss of muscle, and it doesn’t seem to be the case. However, our goal remains to minimize muscle loss as much as possible.

Muscle mass and strength are crucial for long-term health and wellness. Muscle enables us to move and perform daily tasks, from cleaning the house to lifting luggage. It also helps prevent falls and broken bones, maintaining our independence and quality of life. Beyond mobility, muscle plays a vital role in metabolic health, regulating blood sugar, and insulin sensitivity, and maintaining a high metabolism, which can prevent diabetes and heart diseases.

Losing weight is only half the equation. We need to preserve and build muscle to ensure the health benefits of fat loss are not lost. Resistance training and higher protein intake are essential. The current recommendation of 0.8g/kg of body weight per day is only enough to survive. To thrive, we should aim for around 1.6g/kg.

Ultimately, focusing solely on weight loss can lead to undesirable outcomes in the future. Preserving and building muscle is key to maintaining your health, independence, and quality of life as you age.

Do GLP-1 Medications Increase Thyroid Cancer Risk?

A new study has raised concerns about GLP-1s like Ozempic, Wegovy, and Mounjaro—but is the fear justified? I break down the real findings, the role of early detection bias, and what it actually means for GLP-1 users. Get the facts, not the fear.

Wegovy, Zepbound & Heart Failure

Wegovy and Zepbound are showing promise in treating heart failure, especially in individuals with obesity. Recent studies suggest that these medications could improve heart function, reduce inflammation, and help with weight management.

Switching from Wegovy to Zepbound: Can You Stack Weight Loss?

Switching from Wegovy to Zepbound doesn’t guarantee more weight loss. Wegovy targets GLP-1, while Zepbound works on both GLP-1 and GIP, which may offer additional benefits. But weight loss isn’t stackable—most people won’t lose more just by switching. I explain what to expect and who might benefit from the switch.
